One is an invitation to take a cruise along the Danube through the picturesque Wachau Valley and on to Budapest, a couple of superb locations in the one-time Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Then we can marvel at Europe from a plane, similarly in shots taken by Gaumont, which we made in 1922 on the maiden flight of the first French-Romanian, European airline, presenting the famous sights of ten countries en route from London to Constantinople. The film was restored by Gaumont based on an Italian print for the 130th anniversary of the foundation of the studio.

Wales at the turn of the century. Frenchman Claude is on holiday and this is where he meets English sisters Anne and Muriel. The three become entangled in a complex love affair that is both painful and beautiful. However, a true meeting of minds is hampered by their inhibitions and indecision. This movie was a favourite of Truffaut. It is an adaptation of a novel by Henri-Pierre Roché, author of Jules et Jim. The work, which was abridged at its premiere, was supplemented by the director shortly before his death. This is the director’s cut.

Étienne Raïk (István Rajk, 1904-1976), celebrated as the founder of French commercials, spent his childhood in Valkóvár (today, Vukovar in Croatia). The artist who quit his homeland when still young studied the art of animated filmmaking at the feet of legendary Russian film director Alexandre Alexeieff. Together, they made the beverage advertisement film, an adaptation of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale in 1935, on Gasparcolor film. It is considered one of the earliest French colour films. In 1947, he founded a commercials studio called Les Cinéastes Associés in partnership with Jean-Pierre Rhein. Their inimitable projects explored the abstract effects achievable with object animation. Most of the music on their shorts was composed by Georges Delerue, who went on to become famous through Truffaut films, for example, Two English Girls that is being screened at Film Marathon.

The screening will be introduced by Jean-Baptiste Garnero, head of collections at the CNC.
